Bio
Park, Kyung Ryul is an Associate Professor in the KAIST Graduate School of Science and Technology Policy and an Adjunct Professor in the Digital Governance and AI Policy Cluster at New York University (NYU). He serves as the Director of Global Center for Development and Strategy (KAIST G-CODEs).
Park's research lies at the intersection of technology, development, and global governance. His scholarly work addresses a wide range of themes including national development strategies, socio-technical transition, R&D and digital policy, and science diplomacy. His current research projects theorize the rise and fall of technology-driven development agendas as well as explore the potential of artificial intelligence to transform development management for aid classification and SDG monitoring.
Prior to joining KAIST, Professor Park worked in international development sector for seven years. His field experiences spans diverse roles, including the World Bank Innovation Labs, UN World Intellectual Property Organization, and Arusha Technical College. As a development practitioner, he has worked within a multidisciplinary environment in bridging the gap between theory and practice, in linking up data of different epistemological nature (qualitative and quantitative), using a range of innovative methods (experimental analysis, field work, institutional analysis, mixed methods). He worked in Tanzania (2004-2007) as a Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) volunteer, India (2008), the United States and East Africa (2010-2013), Indonesia (2015, 2016) and conducted field research in Kenya, Uganda, and Cambodia.
He has served as a member of the Advisory Committee in Ministry of Science and ICT; Ministry of Foreign Affairs; and the National Committee of International Development Cooperation in Korean government; as well as Meta Inc. .He also served the KAIST AI Institute, AI & Society Committee as the Chair.
He received his Ph.D. in Information Systems and Innovation from London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). He holds a Master’s degree in Public Policy from Harvard Kennedy School and B.S. in Chemical and Biological Engineering, and B.A. in International Relations from Seoul National University (SNU).
